FAMILY SAILING

Spring Break 2025 aboard Norwegian Getaway

Norwegian Getaway was another NCL ship that fit our family really well—and it introduced us to one of our favorite spots on any Norwegian ship: the Sugarcane Mojito Bar. This was the first cruise where we discovered it, and it quickly became a place we loved stopping for a drink and relaxing together. Between the familiar laid-back Norwegian atmosphere, good dining choices, and a great Caribbean itinerary, Getaway gave us the kind of easy, fun family cruise that keeps bringing us back to NCL.

Ratings for this sailing

Food

4

The food on Norwegian Getaway was good and pretty consistent with what we've come to expect from NCL. Norwegian isn't necessarily the cruise line we choose when food is our number-one priority—that would probably be Celebrity for us—but we really like the number of choices NCL gives us. That flexibility works especially well when traveling with Ollie. We can find something simple for him while Hellen and I eat what we want without every meal becoming a production.

Service

4.5

Service was very good throughout the cruise. We've been fortunate with service on most of our cruises, and Getaway continued that trend. The crew was friendly and helpful, and we don't remember any service issues that negatively affected the vacation. Good cruise service sometimes becomes something you don't notice until it's missing. On Getaway, everything generally worked the way it should.

Entertainment

4.5

We enjoyed the entertainment and atmosphere around Getaway. One thing we've learned is that we don't necessarily need a huge production show every night to enjoy ourselves. Sometimes we'd rather find some live music, walk around the ship, have a drink, or simply relax. Getaway gave us enough options that we could find something when we wanted entertainment without feeling like we had to constantly follow a schedule. Sugarcane Mojito Bar Getaway gets some extra credit from us because this was the ship where we discovered the Sugarcane Mojito Bar. It became one of our favorite places to stop for a drink, and we've looked for it on Norwegian ships ever since. That's one of those little things that can make a ship memorable years later. There are bigger attractions onboard, but sometimes it's the bar where you sat together, listened to music, talked, and had a really good mojito that you remember. Getaway introduced us to a place that has now become part of how we cruise Norwegian.

Cabin

4

Our cabin did what we needed it to do. We don't remember anything particularly amazing or terrible about it, which is usually a good sign. By this point, we've learned that we don't need a huge cabin to have a good cruise. We mostly need enough room for the three of us, decent storage, and somewhere comfortable to come back to after spending most of the day elsewhere.

Family activities

4

There were plenty of things available for families, although Ollie's interests were already beginning to change. As he's gotten older, we've found that the number of advertised family activities matters less than whether those activities actually interest him. Sometimes he'd rather swim, explore the ship, play a game, or spend time with us than participate in an organized activity. So while Getaway had family options available, they weren't the defining part of our experience.

Ship condition

4

From what we remember, Getaway was in good condition. It's not one of Norwegian's newest ships, but nothing about its condition became a significant issue for us. The ship felt comfortable and familiar, particularly after having sailed Norwegian several times before. There are newer and flashier ships out there, but we've learned that newer doesn't automatically mean we'll enjoy the cruise more. Pools & Deck Areas The pool and outdoor areas were fine, although they're not what stands out when we think back on Getaway. Like many larger cruise ships, the busiest outdoor areas can get crowded when everyone wants to be outside at the same time. For us, the deck areas were simply one part of the ship rather than the reason we'd choose Getaway.

Value

4

Getaway represents what we think Norwegian does particularly well: value. NCL isn't usually the most luxurious cruise line we've sailed, and we don't expect it to be. What we get instead is a relaxed atmosphere, plenty of dining choices, good itineraries, enjoyable ships, and usually a price that makes sense for our family. That's a combination we keep coming back to. We'd rather spend our vacation budget on the things that matter to us—great ports, excursions, and experiences together—than pay more simply because a ship is newer or more luxurious.

Overall experience

4.5

Norwegian Getaway was another reminder of why NCL has become such a comfortable fit for our family. There wasn't one giant attraction that made the cruise. Instead, it was a combination of things we already know we enjoy: a relaxed atmosphere, plenty of dining choices, good service, Caribbean ports, and the freedom to make the vacation as busy or as lazy as we wanted. And then there was the Sugarcane Mojito Bar. It might seem like a small detail, but this was the cruise where we discovered what would become one of our favorite places on Norwegian ships. Now, when we board an NCL ship that has Sugarcane, it's somewhere we look forward to visiting. That's actually a good description of Getaway as a whole. It wasn't about having the newest or fanciest ship. It was about finding little things we loved and simply enjoying being on vacation together. Getaway gave us another good family cruise—and introduced us to a tradition we've carried onto other Norwegian ships ever since.
