FAMILY SAILING

Fall Break 2024 aboard Celebrity Reflection

Celebrity Reflection was our first Celebrity cruise, and honestly, we booked it because we really wanted to get back on a ship. Fall Break was coming up, we found this cruise somewhat last minute, and decided to give a cruise line we'd never sailed before a try. We didn't really know what to expect from Celebrity. By the end of the cruise, though, we had discovered two things that would change how we cruise: we loved Celebrity's food, and we realized how much we enjoyed eating in the main dining room—even for meals we normally would have eaten at the buffet. This short-notice cruise ended up introducing us to a completely different style of cruising. Food

Ratings for this sailing

Food

5

The food was easily one of the highlights of our first Celebrity cruise. We'd sailed enough by this point to have a pretty good idea of what cruise food was normally like, and Celebrity immediately stood out to us. But the bigger discovery wasn't just that the food was good—it was the main dining room. Before Reflection, we tended to think of the main dining room mostly as somewhere you went for dinner. On this cruise, we started realizing how much we enjoyed sitting down for a proper meal whenever it was available. Breakfast? Main dining room. Lunch when it was open? Main dining room. Dinner? Definitely main dining room. Instead of fighting through a busy buffet and searching for a table, we could sit down together, order our food, talk, and actually enjoy the meal. Reflection changed the way we eat on cruises. Whenever the main dining room is open now, that's usually our first choice.

Service

5

The service was excellent and added to the more relaxed feeling of the cruise. Eating in the main dining room more frequently also gave us more opportunities to experience Celebrity's service. Sitting down, ordering a meal, and having someone take care of everything became part of the vacation for us. The overall experience felt polished without feeling overly formal.

Entertainment

4

Entertainment on Reflection was a little different for us because one performer really stood out—a Brazilian piano player we absolutely loved. Whenever we saw that he was playing, we tried to go listen to him. With Hellen being Brazilian, the music made those evenings especially enjoyable for us and became one of the things we remember most about our first Celebrity cruise. We didn't necessarily find Celebrity's overall entertainment lineup as exciting as what we've experienced on some other cruise lines, but that piano player was the exception. Sometimes the entertainment you remember most isn't the big production show—it's finding a musician you love and making a point to come back every time they play.

Cabin

4.5

Our cabin was comfortable and gave us what we needed for a shorter cruise. Nothing about it became a major part of our memories from this sailing. We spent far more time enjoying the ship, eating, and exploring than sitting in the cabin. For us, that's usually a sign the cabin did its job.

Family activities

3.5

Celebrity isn't the cruise line we'd choose specifically for family activities. There were things available for Ollie, but family programming wasn't a major part of this cruise for us. That's something we've continued to notice with Celebrity. The ships can absolutely work for our family, but they're very different from cruise lines built around water slides, huge kids areas, and nonstop family entertainment. Surprisingly, we're okay with that.

Ship condition

4

Celebrity Reflection made a very good first impression on us. The ship felt nice, comfortable, and more upscale than some of the ships we'd previously sailed. It wasn't about having the biggest slides or newest attractions. Reflection had a calmer atmosphere that encouraged us to slow down. That turned out to be something we liked more than we expected.

Value

4

Celebrity tends to be a little more expensive than some of the cruises we take, but Reflection showed us where some of that extra money was going. For us, the biggest difference was food and service. We're willing to pay somewhat more when the things we care about are noticeably better. We don't necessarily need a dozen attractions onboard. Sometimes we'd rather have an excellent meal, good service, and somewhere comfortable to relax. This cruise helped us understand that value isn't always about finding the cheapest cruise. It's about whether we're actually getting something we care about for the extra money.

Overall experience

4.5

Celebrity Reflection was a bit of an accidental discovery for us. We hadn't spent months planning our first Celebrity cruise. We really wanted another cruise for Fall Break, found Reflection somewhat last minute, and decided to try something different. It ended up influencing how we cruise today. We discovered how much we enjoyed Celebrity's food. We discovered that a quieter ship wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Most importantly, we started eating in the main dining room whenever we could instead of automatically heading to the buffet. That might sound like a small change, but it changed part of the rhythm of our vacations. Instead of every meal being about grabbing food and moving on to the next thing, meals became part of the vacation itself. We'd sit down together, order something we wanted, talk, and enjoy not being in a hurry. Reflection also taught us something about Celebrity. It's probably not the cruise line we'd choose for the best entertainment or the most family activities. But when we want great food, good service, and a cruise where we're perfectly happy slowing down, Celebrity works extremely well for us. We booked this cruise simply because we wanted to cruise again. We got off wanting to sail Celebrity again. And considering we eventually returned to Reflection, that's probably the best review we can give our first Celebrity cruise.
